Plot summary
Since the 1980s, several hundred linoleum tiles of unknown origin have turned up set into the asphalt of streets in roughly two dozen large American cities and in four capitals in South America. Each tile is about the size of a license plate, and the wording on them varies slightly around a single inscription: the Toynbee idea, Kubrick's 2001, and the resurrection of the dead on planet Jupiter. Most people walk over the tiles without noticing them. Justin Duerr, who lives in Philadelphia, does notice, and he has spent years collecting the clues the tiler leaves in the streets, trying to learn where the tiles come from and what the message means.

A reclusive Philadelphia resident is thought to have been responsible for the tiles, beginning by broadcasting a message about his theories on short wave radio before later placing the tiles, at times through a hole in the floor of his car.- The tiles are generally about the size of an American license plate and contain some variation on a single inscription: "TOYNBEE IDEA IN Kubrick's 2001 RESURRECT DEAD ON PLANET JUPITER."
