Plot summary
Kim Wheeler is an attorney in Nevada who is appointed to the bench of the Fifth Judicial District after the judge who held the seat dies under suspicious circumstances. The circuit she takes on stretches between Las Vegas and Reno, across rugged and thinly populated country. Kim's sister Kris runs the local brothel. As the inquiry into the judge's death widens, Kris becomes the prime suspect. The character Kim Wheeler is patterned on the real judge Kim Wanker, appointed by Nevada's governor to the district court in 2011 as the state's first rural female district judge, and one of the last judges in the country to travel a circuit.

- The film is based on Kim Wanker, whom Nevada governor Brian Sandoval appointed in 2011 to the Fifth Judicial District Court, Department 1, as the first rural female District Judge in Nevada.
- Kim Wanker, the real Nevada judge behind the film, was in frequent phone and text contact with Reba McEntire during production, but conflicting schedules stopped the two from meeting before the premiere, so each hosted her own premiere party.
