Plot summary
Lisboa is the boss of the Patents and Inventions Department in Brasilia. When Dr. Brazil turns up to present the time machine he has built, Lisboa puts it to a use its inventor did not expect: he duplicates his employees with it, so that copies of them can handle the work and productivity can climb. Jonas is among the duplicated workers, shut in the basement of the building with the other doubles. The people he can count on are the originals, colleagues with no taste for work, and their help is the only help available to him as he looks for a way to stop the boss's plan.
