Plot summary
It is 1956 on the island of Amatrello, where a custom governs courtship. When a girl reaches eighteen, the young men of the village are asked to bring a gift, not to her but to her father, and he decides which of them takes her on her first outing. Marcello is a fisherman's son of eighteen who pays the tradition no attention until Elena, the daughter of the Mayor, returns to the island having come of age. Time is short and the rivals are many, and Marcello comes up with what he considers the perfect gift for the Mayor, and getting it is not simple.
