Plot summary
On Primrose Hill, Mamie Adams supports her household by selling herself, while her husband Homer, a Greek scholar who drinks, cannot hold a job. The grandmother, who worked the same trade before retiring, sees nothing wrong with it. Mamie's daughter Ellie May is a tomboy and keeps clear of that life. Gramp, who runs a restaurant and gas station by the beach, gives her a ride one day, and she meets Ed Wallace, who works alongside him. Ellie May falls for Ed, tells him her family turned her out over him, and they marry. She takes a job waiting tables at the restaurant and is well liked there, saying nothing to Ed about her family.
