Plot summary
In a town of tall chimneys, smoke never clears and nobody has seen the sky for generations, so the people have stopped believing that stars exist. Lubicchi, a young chimney sweep, holds to what his father Bruno told him about the sky beyond the smoke. On Halloween, a heap of trash in the landfill takes shape as a living creature. A child spots it and the town's Inquisitors are called. A girl hides it in a dumpster, but it is loaded onto a garbage truck. Lubicchi hears it calling and pulls it free, and the two flee together. He names the creature Poupelle and invites him home, while a thief named Scoop, who finds them, offers three wishes in exchange for silence about his work.
