Plot summary
Matthew VanDyke is 26, a shy young man from Baltimore who has led a sheltered life and has been diagnosed with OCD. He has already reported from Iraq as an embedded journalist, and he is looking for what he calls a crash course in manhood on a 35,000-mile motorcycle trip across North Africa and the Middle East. In Libya he becomes friends with a group of young men whose company changes his life, and when the rebellion against Muammar Gaddafi breaks out he joins them in the rebel army, carrying a weapon and a camera and recording the war as he takes part in it.
