Plot summary
Jan Horak is a middle-aged widower who works as a railroad dispatcher at Tank Stop 47, an isolated stop several miles outside town. He has saved $7,000, and on a rare Sunday holiday he goes into town to buy a dog. At a carnival he meets Betty, a young blonde who shows him attention because she is after his money. Betty shares a room with her friend Irma, and the two have not paid their rent for months. Their landlady threatens to call the police unless Betty returns the silverware and linen she pawned. To settle her money troubles, Betty marries Jan.
