Plot summary
Around 2000 a film crew investigating a classified document digs into a story hidden since before the Second World War. In 1938 a burning object came down in the mountains of northern Chile and was later named the Chilean Sphere. The crew's inquiry turns up the records of a secret Soviet space program: in the 1930s the USSR built a rocket and worked toward a crewed flight to the Moon and back. A handful of candidates are chosen and trained for the mission, among them Captain Ivan Kharlamov, Nadezhda Svetlaya, Mikhail Roshchin and Khanif Fattakhov, while Fyodor Suprun serves as Chief Constructor.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Pervye na Lune (2005)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- When parts of the plot leaked out before release, several Russian newspapers took Aleksei Fedorchenko's film for a documentary about a real 1938 Soviet Moon landing and called it the Santiago Meteorite; it is in fact fiction.
- The actors worked without stunt doubles and were really spun in a centrifuge for the cosmonaut-training scenes, even though that training is difficult even for professionals.
- The cosmonaut training scenes were filmed in Chelyabinsk at the Institute of Aviation, which holds equipment from Star City that even Yuri Gagarin used for training.
- First on the Moon won the 2005 Venice Film Festival award for a documentary; Julia Vassilieva credits cinematographer Anatoliy Lesnikov and set designer Nikolai Pavlov with a form that mimicked the documentary mode so successfully.
