Plot summary
During a secret mission beneath the sea ice, the Russian missile submarine Ataman Yermak vanishes in the Greenland Sea. It carries an experimental weapon that must be destroyed before anyone else can claim it. Admiral Belousov gives command of the rescue submarine Zapolyarye to Captain Second Rank Viktor Voronin, the missing commander's younger brother. Counter Admiral Olshansky sails with him and can take over if Viktor's personal stake clouds his judgment. At the North Pole, the Swedish expedition scientists Julia and Oskar set off explosive charges for hydrological experiments. After their snowmobile crashes, their camp is swallowed by ice. The submarine crew reports activity of an unknown nature and then founders. The Navy sends Zapolyarye to locate Ataman Yermak and its beacon. A Kraken appears in the northern waters.
