Plot summary
David Valentine is on a research ship off the coast of Southern California, not far from Catalina Island. A deep-sea robot scanning the seafloor returns unusual signals, and he finds a trail of barrels on the bottom that no one has seen before. Years of warnings to government officials come to nothing. He messages Rosanna Xia, who covers the environment for the Los Angeles Times.
