Plot summary
Under the rule of the Mongol Empire, Jinha grows up poor in his uncle's care, learning Bichun, a secret martial art, from him. Sullie, whose mother is a concubine in the household of the powerful General Taruga, is raised alongside the boy, and the two grow close. After her mother's death, Taruga brings Sullie into his house; she promises Jinha that she will wait for him, but the general pledges her to the Chinese lord Namgung Junkwang to strengthen an alliance. Warriors seeking the secrets of Bichun leave the uncle mortally wounded, and with his last words he tells Jinha that his father was a noble swordsman killed by the Mongol army, and that he himself served as one of his father's guards.
