- Jang Joon-hwan conceived the film while watching Misery (1990): disappointed by the lack of depth in the Annie Wilkes character, he decided a kidnapping story should be told from the kidnapper's point of view, then combined that with a crank website he found accusing Leonardo DiCaprio of being an alien who wanted to conquer Earth by seducing its women.
