Plot summary
Sy Parrish works behind the counter of a one-hour photo lab inside a SavMart store, a solitary man with no friends and a pet hamster for company at home. He considers the work a vital service, and the family he serves most often is the Yorkins, whose pictures he has developed for years and secretly copied for himself. Nina Yorkin and her son Jake are the two who drop off and collect the family's photofinishing; Will, her husband, Sy knows only from photographs. Sy sparks a conversation with Nina by pretending an interest in a book he watched her buy, and Nina learns how solitary his life is, something until then only Jake had noticed.

- Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails was originally asked to compose the score, but early in the process Romanek was allegedly pressured by the studio to hire a “real composer” and Reznor was dropped; some of his music evolved into the Nine Inch Nails EP Still.
- In the DVD commentary Romanek says that Jack Nicholson was first approached to play the lead character, but Nicholson turned the role down, reportedly because he thought the character was too similar to the one he played in The Shining.
- In keeping with the photography theme, characters are named for real photographers: Sy's assistant Yoshi Araki for Nobuyoshi Araki, manager Bill Owens, the detectives Van Der Zee and Outerbridge for James Van Der Zee and Paul Outerbridge, Maya Burson for Nancy Burson, and customers for Ellen von Unwerth and Aaron Siskind.
- In a voice-over Sy scoffs that people believe any idiot who attends a two-day seminar can master the art of making beautiful prints in less than an hour; Williams prepared by training for two and a half days in a Southern California photo development lab.
- In an interview Romanek said that he was inspired to create the movie by films from the 1970s about “lonely men”, notably Taxi Driver from 1976.
