Plot summary
Growing up Catholic and poor in Liverpool, a filmmaker looks back at his childhood and youth in the city. He rejects religion, and the homo-eroticism he discovers is tinged with Catholic guilt. Pop records give way in his teens to Mahler and Wagner. Archival newsreel and documentary footage shows a ferry trip to a day on the beach, and postwar prosperity bringing change alongside concrete architecture he finds dispiriting. Unemployment and persistent poverty sit beside contemporary color images of children playing. The soundtrack mixes music of the period with classical works. His narration draws on his own reflections and on the poems and prose of other writers.
