Plot summary
Whales, dolphins and porpoises look nothing like people, yet the documentary puts them forward as possibly our closest relatives in cognitive ability and family ties. Its chapters turn to emotion and language, social organization and intelligence, and contact between cetaceans and humans, with family the idea that holds them together. More than a hundred filmmakers, twenty-five scientists and other experts joined the project, gathering new footage and new scientific discoveries from beneath the ocean surface. The cetaceans on screen are presented as the largest diversity yet captured on camera, and the aim is to move audiences to care for the oceans and want them protected.
