Plot summary
Danni Sanders works as a photo editor at Depravity, an online magazine in New York City, and struggles both with the job and with making friends. After getting high with Colin, a co-worker and social media influencer she has a crush on, she pretends she has been invited to a writers' retreat in Paris. From her Brooklyn apartment she posts edited pictures of herself there and builds a website for the invented retreat, and a small Instagram following grows, Colin among them. Days later, terrorists bomb landmarks across Paris, among them the Arc de Triomphe. To keep the story going, Danni claims she witnessed the attack and stages a return from Paris, where her parents collect her at the airport. Her parents, co-workers and followers now treat her as a survivor.

- Many viewers took the opening warning of Not Okay as completely serious instead of a commentary on test-screening reactions; women who watched the film complained on Twitter that films centered on unlikable men never seemed to need such warnings.
- Quinn Shephard added a warning to Not Okay naming "flashing lights, themes of trauma, and an unlikable female protagonist" among things that might discomfort viewers; the last item came from test screenings where audiences were bewildered a film would have such a main character, and Shephard said she wanted to poke at that.
