Plot summary
A filmmaker retraces the life of Bruce Chatwin, the British travel writer who was his friend and who gave him his rucksack as a parting gift, through Patagonia, the Black Mountains in Wales and the Australian Outback. In Patagonia he visits Punta Arenas and the Cueva del Milodón, meeting Karin Eberhard, great-granddaughter of the explorer Hermann Eberhard, and the paleoanthropologist Richard Leakey. He speaks with Chatwin's widow Elizabeth at Llanthony Priory. In Central Australia he meets Aboriginal elders and discusses the anthropologist Ted Strehlow with Shaun Angeles Penange, and he visits Hermannsburg in the Northern Territory. The biographer Nicholas Shakespeare tells him about The Nomadic Alternative, the book Chatwin left unfinished, and speaks of Chatwin the storyteller and mimic.
