Plot summary
Juliet and Vivian Lowe are twins in their final year at Lindberg Academy, a boarding school for the performing arts. Both are classical pianists, but Vivian is a prodigy headed to Juilliard, while Juliet has decided to take a gap year. When a senior who was to play the school showcase dies, auditions are held for her place. Both sisters enter, and Juliet switches her audition piece to the concerto Vivian has chosen. A violin draws her to the dead student's room, where a sun symbol matches one in a theory notebook she found earlier. Dr. Cask interrupts her there and names the piece from the notebook as Giuseppe Tartini's The Devil's Trill; he challenges her for altering her audition piece without telling Vivian.
