Plot summary
Tim Cornish studies English at Warwick University and is in his final year, leading a promiscuous life. He spots Dr Ivo Steadman, a paleontology lecturer, and arranges to meet him in a lift and at his office. At New Year, Ivo turns up at Tim's house in Suffolk, and a passionate relationship begins between them. Ivo's sister visits him over Easter, so the two do not see each other for that stretch. When Ivo tells Tim that he loves him, Tim, haunted by things older boys said to him at school, feels nothing. Ivo is to lecture elsewhere for a day, and while he is gone Tim has a sexual encounter with another male student. Ivo's regular trip to Alaska is coming, and Tim is to travel with him.
