Plot summary
Jerry "Babe" Stewart makes his living cheating at cards, working with Kay Everly, Charlie Vane and Vargas. A poker game takes money from a man named Morton, and officer "Dickie" Collins lets Babe know that Morton has been told. Babe decides to leave New York for a while and chooses Glendale by chance. There he meets Connie Randall, a librarian who is bored with the town. She keeps him at a distance, thinking that is how to hold the interest of a man like him, though she finds it hard to hide her own attraction. Before Babe goes back to New York, she plays on his gambling instinct, getting him to call a coin toss on whether they marry. It comes up tails, and they do.

- No Man of Her Own exists because Marion Davies wanted Bing Crosby for her next film, Going Hollywood (1933), and pushed MGM to trade Clark Gable for him. William Randolph Hearst persuaded Louis B. Mayer to make the deal, sending Gable to Paramount.
- Miriam Hopkins was offered the female lead but balked when she learned Clark Gable would receive top billing, and demanded a different project instead. Carole Lombard, then a rising Paramount player still second-billed to her male co-stars, replaced her.
- Clark Gable and Carole Lombard were entirely indifferent to each other while making the film: Lombard was in a foul mood over a loan-out to United Artists and still in love with her husband, actor William Powell, and Gable did not approve of her colorful language.
- On the last day of filming, Clark Gable gave Carole Lombard ballerina slippers with a card reading "To a true primadonna"; she retaliated by presenting him with a large ham bearing his picture.
- While loaned to Paramount, Clark Gable looked over the studio's available scripts and the only one that interested him was No Man of Her Own, a project that had originally been slated for George Raft.
- Val Lewton's 1932 novel No Bed of Her Own was adapted by Austin Parker, but after concerns from Hays Office censors, Paramount bought another story, "Here Is My Heart", in August 1932 to soften the film.
