Plot summary
A leak at a chemical research complex in Papua New Guinea turns the technicians and locals into zombies. In Barcelona, eco-terrorists seize the US Embassy and take hostages, demanding that all such centers be closed, which officials deny exist. Interpol sends four commandos, Lt. Mike London, Osborne, Zantoro and Vincent, to end the siege. The team then loses contact with the complex and flies to Papua New Guinea, where journalist Lia Rousseau and her cameraman Max are looking into violent attacks on the locals when their car breaks down. Lia and Max join the team, and the group heads into the jungle.

- Margit Evelyn Newton, cast as the protagonist Lia, felt nervous filming a nude scene in front of indigenous people and asked that everyone be removed from the set except indispensable cast and crew; the scene was shot in one day.
- Co-writer Claudio Fragasso said the crew arrived in Barcelona to shoot the film and found they had no money, so they had to improvise and rewrite the script they came with.
- Most of the Goblin score is taken from other films the band had worked on, such as Dawn of the Dead and Contamination, and Fragasso said the music also came from Goblin's 1976 album Roller because asking them for a new score would have been too expensive.
- The film was director Bruno Mattei's first to be made under the name Vincent Dawn, a pseudonym requested specifically by the film's Spanish production side.
- Mattei planned a film inspired by Dawn of the Dead but wanted a lighter tone, and said that of the two screenplays written, the producers rejected the one he preferred.
- In 2020 the horror film Corona Zombies was created largely by taking footage from Hell of the Living Dead and dubbing new dialogue over it.
