Plot summary
Melvin White is an inept police officer whose lying captain, Lewis, sends him to night patrol. His partner, Kent Lane, has ten years on the force and likes having sex with women in their patrol car. Fellow officer Sue Perman is drawn to White, though he reads her attention as friendship. Off duty, White performs as the Unknown Comic, a stand-up who hides behind a paper bag with holes for the eyes and mouth, and talent agent Kate Parker offers him a chance at bigger fame. A fan named Edith Hutton wants to know who is under the bag. Meanwhile a gunman disguised as the Unknown Comic robs bars, and Lewis suspects White. To clear himself without giving away his act, White and Lane set out to find the impersonator.
