Plot summary

Montclare has been in Linda Stevens's family for years, and the house holds a long-standing rest home for the elderly. Her estranged mother's death leaves Linda the property, and she reaches it the same night that Mrs. Ryan, a new boarder, is dropped off by her son Kelvin. Soon after, a resident is found drowned in a bathtub. In the diaries her mother left behind, Linda reads of her mother's unease in the home and of a belief that someone was watching her. Handwritten medical records for her aunt Rita trouble her, since she had been told Rita was already dead when they were written. Linda reconnects with Barney, a man she was romantic with years earlier, and the two go on a date.
