Plot summary
In the last days of World War II, a Nazi officer returns to his family's home in southwestern Germany. The household flees to a cabin in the Black Forest. The father soon leaves. When news arrives that Adolf Hitler is dead, the mother knows she will be arrested; she goes to a camp and leaves her five children with Lore, the eldest. She gives Lore her jewelry and money for train tickets and tells her to take the others to their grandmother in Husum, near Hamburg. The neighbors stop selling them food, and Günther is caught stealing. With the trains no longer running, Lore and her siblings abandon their belongings and set out on foot. On the road they meet a young man who calls himself Thomas and says he is a Jewish concentration camp survivor; he joins them.
