Plot summary
Jane used to sing for a living. An accident left her paralyzed, and she now lives in Marysville, Kansas, where she keeps to herself. Joey, her friend, stutters and is convinced he can talk with ghosts and angels that nobody else can see or hear, a belief the two of them argue about. Searching her home for a book about angels he had lent her, he turns the place upside down, and the police take him to a hospital. Back at her house, he comes across a letter from her son, inviting her to a communion in Baton Rouge, where the boy lives with an adoptive family. Joey begs her to go with him to New Orleans, where an author who writes about angels is giving a talk.
