Plot summary
Craig Foster free-dives daily in a cold underwater kelp forest near Simon's Town in False Bay, South Africa, a site exposed to the cold Benguela current. He documents his visits and meets a curious young common octopus that captures his attention. Over nearly a year, he follows her through the kelp, visiting her den and tracking her movements until she trusts him. She plays with Foster and allows him to watch how she sleeps, lives, and eats, while often defending herself from pyjama sharks in the same water.
