Plot summary
Marek Polsky, an elderly Polish Jew who survived the Holocaust, lives alone in the Argentine countryside, where he gardens and plays chess. In May 1960, after Mossad agents seize the Nazi official Adolf Eichmann in Argentina, an old German named Herzog moves into the house next door. Polsky becomes convinced his neighbor is Adolf Hitler, who he believes escaped to South America and hid himself there. Nobody takes the claim seriously, so Polsky begins his own investigation, and the evidence leaves him unsure.
