Plot summary
In the hill town of Solan, Beni Madhav Singh earns a living from music lessons and from singing Bollywood songs at local parties. He lives with his sister Urmi and his mother Madhavi, who worries about his refusal to take a salaried job and his decision to stay unmarried. Years earlier Beni trained Jyotsna Ray, known as Jonai, a gifted young singer who left for Mumbai and became a famous performer. The town is buzzing over news that Jyotsna is returning after eight years for a concert, and people keep reminding Beni that she was his pupil. Geeta, a neighbor whose husband is often away, is the friend he confides in, and Beni still sings on the hillside in the evenings, thinking of Jonai.
