Plot summary
In New York City in 1981, violinist Roberta Guaspari has recently divorced her husband, Navy officer Charles Demetras, who has decided to pursue a relationship with her friend Lana Holden. Her mother Assunta urges her to return to work for the sake of her sons, Alexi and Nicholas. Wrapping gifts at a department store, she reconnects with a former classmate, Brian Turner, who arranges an introduction to Janet Williams, principal of East Harlem's Central Park East School. Roberta has little experience teaching music, but she accepts a substitute violin post and supplies fifty child-size violins she bought in Greece. Her toughness and determination win over a class of children and their parents, who are skeptical at first. The program takes hold gradually and draws attention, spreading to Central Park East II and the River East School.
