Trailer

Plot summary

An-hyeop lives in a small Korean village during the Japanese occupation. Her husband, Kim Sam-bo, is a gambler who stays away for months and comes home only briefly, leaving her to find food and goods for the household. She gathers mulberry leaves for a neighbor's silkworms, and she sleeps with most of the men in the village. The village women, angered by the attention their husbands pay her, beat her and press the village elder to expel her, and when the elder visits her home she wins him over. The one man she turns away is Sam-dol, the village servant, who is furious at the refusal and intends to tell Sam-bo what his wife has been doing.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Mulberry (1986)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Lee Dae-geun, the era's Korean cinematic "tough guy", became a sex symbol by playing the village servant Sam-dol, which caused him consternation. Because the film's erotic elements upstaged what he called its literary qualities, he refused to appear in the first sequel, Mulberry 2 (1988).
