Plot summary
Shin, a nobleman of the Joseon period, wants a son to carry on his line and has not been able to have one. His wife, who cannot bear him a boy, gives him leave to find a surrogate wife. On his way to look for one he meets Ok-nyeo, a poor seventeen-year-old who tells him she will do anything for money. Her stubborn streak draws him, and he chooses her to bear his child. In his household she lives as a servant. The rules of the arrangement keep her out of sight in daylight, restrict her to the hours his wife sets, and forbid her to leave the building that houses her.
