Plot summary
Francis Munch is an ex-CIA agent and former mercenary who kills the men who come to hire him instead of taking their jobs, which leaves him with enemies. Martha McKay, coming out of a relationship and hoping to find love again, meets him and takes to him at once. A team of gunmen that includes Espinoza comes after Munch, and he dodges the attack; he and Martha spend a chaste night together. At dinner the next evening Espinoza attacks again. Over hot chocolate Munch sets out his belief that a current underlies all physical objects and can be anticipated ahead of time. He tosses a kitchen knife upward and catches it as it comes down, and Martha catches a knife thrown at her by its blade without being cut.
