Plot summary
As the Civil War draws to a close, the Mannon family waits at its New England estate for Ezra Mannon and his son Orin. Seth, the old family servant, shows neighbors through the house. In New York City, Lavinia follows her mother, Christine, to the rooms of the sea captain Adam Brant and sees the two kiss. Lavinia has kissed Brant herself. Back home, Peter Niles proposes to her, and she turns him down because her father needs her.
