Plot summary
Wallets tied to the name Satoshi Nakamoto hold roughly one million coins, about six percent of the supply, and are presumed to be under that person's control, which would pose a risk to Bitcoin's value. Bitcoin's creator has never been identified. A filmmaker travels widely to interview industry figures, following the currency's early history and its evolution from cypherpunk roots to a holding in retirement accounts and a part of the global financial system. Bitcoin spreads worldwide and battles the U.S. government. Commentators noted that Bitcoin's stability rests on the assumption that the creator and the coins are gone for good.

Peter Todd called the film's theory that he is Satoshi Nakamoto "ludicrous", then denied it after release and criticized Cullen Hoback, calling the theory "coincidence-based conspiracy thinking". Wired reported in late October 2024 that he had gone into hiding; Todd said that was an exaggeration.- After finishing Q Into the Storm, Adam McKay asked Cullen Hoback to make a documentary about Satoshi Nakamoto; Hoback agreed only on condition he could gain access to suspects, which led him to Adam Back.
