Plot summary
South Africa's white minority government is fighting a proxy war in Angola and Namibia, and every white man over sixteen is required to serve two years in the South African Defence Force. Nicholas van der Swart, a shy nineteen-year-old, reports for training, where sadistic sergeants beat the recruits into soldiers who hate and kill. Any recruit who fails to meet the ideal of Afrikaner masculinity faces shame, abuse and worse. Nicholas is English-speaking, though his surname comes from his stepfather, and he is gay, which is a crime in the military. He keeps his head down and forms a quiet connection with another recruit, Dylan Stassen, while the threat of Ward 22 hangs over anyone found out.
