Plot summary
Ira Glasser ran the American Civil Liberties Union from 1978 to 2001. When he took over, the group was small and near bankruptcy; by the time he left it had grown into a national organization with offices around the country and a sizable endowment. The documentary traces his decades of work on free speech and racial justice, including the ACLU's decision to represent neo-Nazis who wanted to demonstrate in Skokie, Illinois, a Chicago suburb that was then home to many Holocaust survivors. Ben Stern, a 96-year-old survivor, explains why he thought that decision was wrong. It also returns to Glasser's Brooklyn childhood and the conversation with Senator Robert Kennedy that led to his first job with the ACLU.
