Plot summary
Mea Harper is a defense attorney in Chicago whose marriage to Kal is strained by his infidelity and by the domineering influence of his mother, Azalia. At a dinner for Azalia's birthday, the family hears that Ray Hawthorne, an assistant district attorney with political ambitions, will handle a prominent murder prosecution against Zyair Malloy, a local artist. Zyair asks Mea to take his defense, saying he is innocent and that Ray bears him a grudge. Charlise, Mea's close friend and Ray's wife, and Kal both tell her to refuse. Mea answers with the couple's unpaid bills and with Kal's six months without a paycheck. She begins examining the evidence against Zyair while her in-laws argue that the case could damage the family's name as Ray prepares a mayoral run.
