Plot summary
Sammy Ko is thirteen years old and gets expelled from school while reeling from the death of her mother. Her father Angus, a widower, is busy with work, and his fiance Marianne is trying to warm up to his daughters. Sammy's elder sister Patricia Ko likes to play a video game called Kingdom Cog. Sammy meets Margot, an orphaned magician known as Margot the Marvelous, whose manner is surly. The two become friends, and Margot's sleight of hand magic helps Sammy with her inner demons and her family.
