Plot summary
A documentary about the writers and artists behind Marvel Comics characters and about what those characters have come to mean. Guests from across Marvel's history discuss creations including Black Panther, Miles Morales, Luke Cage, the X-Men and Captain Marvel, and weigh the company's record on representing race, gender and sexual orientation. Among the other voices are a media scholar, a rabbi and a rapper. The project began as a planned history of T'Challa, better known as Black Panther, ahead of the release of a film about him, but during their research the filmmakers found Marvel's efforts to break new ground spread across too many characters for one.

- Marvel's Behind the Mask was first planned to show the history of T'Challa, also known as Black Panther, ahead of the 2018 film Black Panther. But Michael Jacobs, Chris Gary and Ryan Simon found during research that Marvel's work on representing race, gender and sexual orientation was richer and more complex than one character.
- Producer Chris Gary, who is Black, said the use of certain colors for skin tones in Marvel comics, such as depicting Asian characters as yellow and Black characters as gray, was shocking, and he did not know how he would explain that to his kids, who have Black and Asian heritage.
- The documentary's filmmakers said Marvel executives backed a "warts-and-all look" at the company's representation efforts, particularly after its "less than admirable history" of depicting race through skin tone coloring and sexual orientation, which Gary said Marvel accepted would be uncomfortable.
