Plot summary
Rembrandt lives in 1642 Amsterdam as a celebrated painter, with a pregnant wife, Saskia van Uylenburg. The musketeer regiment of Frans Banninck Cocq and Willem van Ruytenburch wants a group portrait that will celebrate its civilian soldiers, so Rembrandt takes the commission. Behind the merchants' play at soldiering and their maneuvering for money and personal power lies a killing. Confident of a longed-for son and heir, he resolves to expose the men responsible and builds the charge into the painting itself, an allegory inside what was meant to be a prestigious commission for painter and regiment alike.
