Plot summary

Robert Mapplethorpe was openly gay, and his pictures of male sex, nudity and fetish went to extremes. He pictured nude men in rubber suits, made close-ups of erections and put objects into the most intimate of places. He is often called the twentieth century's most controversial photographer, and some still label the work pornography masquerading as art. His serene, striking portraits of flowers and sculptures and his perfectly framed human forms are equally pioneering. A documentary examines his photographs and the man behind them.
