Plot summary
Tracy Edwards grows up in England and Wales, leaves school at sixteen, and travels to Greece, where she works as a stewardess on a yacht and learns to sail. She becomes set on the Whitbread Round the World Race and joins a 1985-86 entry as cook, the only woman aboard. After that race she announces an all-female crew for the next edition, despite doubt from others. Finding the required million pounds in sponsorship proves difficult. Edwards takes out a mortgage on her home to buy a used yacht, renames it Maiden, and borrows against it again to fund a refit that her crew mostly does herself. King Hussein helps arrange backing from Royal Jordanian Airlines. Edwards takes on the roles of skipper and navigator for the Whitbread.
