Plot summary
Madonna's Drowned World Tour was her first concert tour in eight years, supporting the albums Ray of Light and Music. A summer date at The Palace of Auburn Hills in Michigan, played to a crowd of 17,000, was broadcast live on HBO. Fourteen high definition cameras filmed the performance. Costumes designed for the tour indicated different phases of her career. Songs from before the 1990s were limited to Holiday and La Isla Bonita.

- In January 2002 Billboard reported that Drowned World Tour 2001 was banned from release in Singapore as "too explicit". The Media Development Authority objected to two scenes in the "What It Feels Like for a Girl" interlude, among them Japanese-inspired animation of a monster fondling and raping an Asian girl, and Madonna's management debated putting out an edited version.
- Madonna's HBO broadcast Madonna Live! Drowned World Tour 2001 was her first for the network since 1993. Her earlier special, Madonna Live Down Under: The Girlie Show from Sydney, Australia, had become HBO's most-watched original program of the year.
- The Drowned World Tour played only cities in Europe and the United States, which made it the first and only Madonna tour ever to skip over Canada completely.
