Plot summary

Sathyamoorthy, an honest reporter, breaks a story about an influential person at a school and tells his son Mathimaaran that honesty needs cleverness too. Years later Mathimaaran is an investigative journalist. He clashes with senior editor Aravindan over his principles, while managing director Kesavan, an acquaintance of his father, supports him but advises caution. Police inspector Arjun, his friend, asks him to look into the politician Pazhani, and Mathimaaran and his colleagues expose a plan to rig an election by changing EVM machines. Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Maaran (2022)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • While Maaran was in production, director Karthick Naren was reported to have quit the project and star Dhanush to direct the remaining portions with Subramaniam Siva assisting, but the producers denied the claims and said Naren was still on the film.
  • Vivek, who co-wrote Maaran's screenplay and dialogue, announced in March 2022 that he had left that role because of creative differences, though he stayed on as lyricist for two of the film's songs.
  • The track "Polladha Ulagam", written by Vivek and sung by Dhanush with rap by Arivu, became the most viewed Tamil song in 24 hours, with over 7.8 million views, until "Arabic Kuthu" broke the record.
  • An earlier Tamil film called Maaran had come out in 2002, so the makers of Dhanush's Maaran had to obtain a no-objection certificate from that film's producer before announcing their title on 28 July 2021.
  • Malavika Mohanan was announced on 31 October 2020 as Maaran's female lead opposite Dhanush; she had been approached by Karthick Naren before the pandemic, and got the part because her other films, including #D43, were pushed to the following year.
