• Aayirathil Oruvan came about because B. R. Panthulu was in debt after Veerapandiya Kattabomman (1959), Kappalottiya Thamizhan (1961) and Karnan (1964) failed to recover their costs; he asked M. G. Ramachandran for help, and told him he would shelve the film unless he acted in it.
• Jayalalithaa credited Aayirathil Oruvan with paving the way for her entry into politics, and she and M. G. Ramachandran went on to co-star in more than 20 films.
• B. R. Panthulu cast the then-newcomer Jayalalithaa after being impressed by the rushes of her performance in his own film Chinnada Gombe (1964), and it was Ramachandran's first film with Panthulu.
• For the 2014 re-release, the original negatives were entirely damaged, so Prasad EFX of Chennai converted the whole running length from 35 mm to digital scope, with the background music completely re-recorded.
• The soundtrack was by Viswanathan–Ramamoorthy, the duo of M. S. Viswanathan and T. K. Ramamoorthy; it was the last film they worked on together until Engirundho Vandhan in 1995.
• "Atho Andha Paravai" remained one of the most popular songs from the film and was remixed and featured in the 2010 film Aayirathil Oruvan, which is unrelated to the 1965 original.
