Plot summary
Martin Luther enters St. Augustine's Monastery in Erfurt as an Augustinian friar, where he is troubled by the thought of a God of hate and vengeance. His mentor Johann von Staupitz urges him to look to Christ instead of himself. Carrying a letter for Staupitz to Rome, he is disturbed by the wicked lifestyles he finds there and buys an indulgence. Sent to Wittenberg, he teaches his congregation that God is a God of love. When Pope Leo X commissions Johann Tetzel to travel through the communities selling indulgences to fund the rebuilding of St. Peter's Basilica, Luther denounces the practice in his church and posts his 95 theses on the door, asking for an open debate.
