Plot summary
Nicolas Mallet is a modest bank employee who has settled for social mediocrity in exchange for the security his job gives him. Introverted and dull, he approaches Marie-Paule Allard, a young woman he has never met, in the streets of Paris and invites her to a café; the next day they sleep together. He shares the encounter with Claude Fabre, a novelist and an old friend from high school, who is surprised by it. Disillusioned and handicapped, Claude forms a plan to control and manipulate Nicolas's life. He first brings him to Roberte, the frustrated and bored wife of a professor of philosophy.
