Plot summary
Deepak Kumar, a young farmer in Nirmal Pradesh, is bringing his bride, Phool Kumari, home in 2001. Their overnight train is packed with newlywed couples, and custom puts every bride in the same red bridal dress, face hidden under a ghoonghat. Deepak falls asleep and wakes as the train pulls into his station; in the dark rush he steps off with the wrong bride, leaving Phool aboard with another groom, Pradeep. At his home the mistake comes to light when the bride lifts her veil, and she gives the family a false name, Pushpa. Phool, stranded at a distant platform, knows neither Deepak's village nor his telephone number. Fearing shame on her family, she will not go back to her village, and Manju Mai, who runs a tea stall at the station, gives her shelter and work.

- In March 2025, social media users noticed parallels between Laapataa Ladies and Burqa City, a 2019 Arabic short film by French filmmaker Fabrice Bracq; both centre on a veiled bride swapped by mistake and the husband's frantic search. Bracq said he was surprised and concerned by the similarities.
- Laapataa Ladies writer Biplab Goswami called the plagiarism claims against the film "completely untrue" and "baseless", saying he had registered a synopsis titled Two Brides with the Screenwriters Association on 3 July 2014, well before Burqa City existed.
- Laapataa Ladies was chosen as India's entry for Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards but was not nominated, a selection that raised concerns and controversy over the film instead of All We Imagine as Light.
- Laapataa Ladies was shot in Bamuliya and Dhamankheda villages in the Sehore district of Madhya Pradesh, where local villagers were cast as secondary characters and filming took place in actual houses.
