Los Negros (2022) on Netflix

Plot summary

From the fourteenth century onward, Africans enslaved and shipped to Seville live in the city's outlying slums, where many struggle to get by. Gonzalo de Mena has a hospital and a chapel built for them, and sets up a brotherhood so that they can take part in the religious and social life of the city. Its members become the first religious congregation, a status they have to defend against the other brotherhoods, which are white, and they must also keep the religious authorities from suspending or banning the group. In popular speech the Brotherhood of the Negroes later becomes the Negritos, and over time the membership shifts from slaves and freedmen to poor white Sevillians.
